Writing
Scientific writing is often challenging for graduate students; however, being an effective writer is critical for a successful scientific career. You are encouraged to be proactive about improving your writing skills.
Resources at Penn State
The Graduate Writing Center can help you throughout your graduate career. Their services range from workshops to individual consultations.
The English for Professional Purposes Intercultural Center (EPPIC) is a great resource provided by Applied Linguistics to help international students communicate in English. They run workshops, have speaking groups, and also do individual consultations on both speaking and writing.
Classes can also be helpful. One to check out is ENGL 418, Advanced Technical Writing and Editing.
Private Writing Coaches
You may also find a private writing coach helpful. Scientific writing coaches specialize in helping clients to convey information in the most effective way possible, and may get you on a good path with thesis writing. Mary Howe (mhowe@howe-scientific.com) is a nearby writing coach who has proven useful to other students.
