Species conservation has both successes and failures - there are countless reasons for the failures, but there is only one general recipe for success._ Failures occur because the effort was started too late, because of a lack of safe habitat for reintroductions, because of a misunderstanding of the biology or ecology of the endangered species or ecosystem, because of introduced exotic species including diseases and parasites, and because of combinations of these and other reasons._ The winning strategy has three parts: First, understanding the conservation-related biology of the endangered species and the ecology of the ecosystem; second, developing_ a strong working relationship with the people and regulatory bodies in the conservation area; and third, fostering an ongoing, locally sustained, permanent conservation education and monitoring system._ Examples will be given to illustrate these points.
