A review of current research and theory on the causes of dispersal behavior and its consequences for ecological and evolutionary processes. The focus will be on the role of the environment in initiating movements between habitat patches and the selection of new habitat patches. Applications to future research directions in an amphibian system will be briefly discussed. _
