A review of ectomycorrhizal fungi and water stress.

Water availability is a major determinant of biotic distribution, but most research concerning water stress has been focused on plants. Given the predicted shifts in precipitation regimes in temperate ecosystems and the important roles fungi play in ecosystem processes, surprisingly little is known about the role water availability plays in structuring fungal communities. Research concerning the effects of water stress on ectomycorrhizal fungi physiology and community structure will be reviewed.
